A Church Becomes a Home

An abandoned Medieval property in Italy’s Chianti region comprised by a deconsecrated church and an adjacent apartment in La Convertoie, has been restored and fused into a single residence.
The property dates back to the 1th century. Siena architect Marco Vidotto and Vero Beach, Florida, designer Susan Schuyler Smith were appointed to bring it back to life.





The nave—now the living room—was restored to reflect its original design.


Restoration of the church was done under the direction of the institution charged with preserving Italy’s cultural heritage. Smith’s goal was to “create a warm and cozy space with the use of lighting, furnishings and colour,” while honouring the structure’s rich history. Vidotto brought the fresco above the altar’s replastered arch back to life.


Converted to a study, the sacristy had been added in the 1800s; Smith chose a wainscot chair and trestle table from that period.


The dining room, with its original beams, previously served as a loggia connecting the apartment to the church.


Smith installed the center island and cabinetry in the kitchen. The mid-19th-century fireplace “was kept as the focal point,” says the designer.


In the terrace garden, Chianti-based landscape architect Nancy Leszczynski planted Italian sage, rosemary, a pomegranate tree and assorted other flora.

Decorating With Nature

Dreamy Baroque Style

Tuesday and we're off to see this beautifully restored old residence in France. The Provence Baroque style and golden ochres of these rooms full of antiques takes us back in time. It would be a perfect set for a romantic film. Let us dream.



Austrian gilt chairs, antique chest of drawers and Venetian sofa covered with white linen cushions for the lounge.


In the dining room an iron and wood chandelier hangs over a large school table. Baroque Italian chairs and dresser.


On the other side of the room a stone frame draws a huge carpet on the concrete floor. Large windows with interior shutters. Nineteenth century rustic table lit by Italian baroque lanterns.


The kitchen is located in the old cellar. On the left, to fill the recessed area which was once the bread oven, a custom made cupboard was built into the wall.


The landing has been turned into a bedroom. The extra bed is crowned by drapes in Polish linen. White Provencal stone flooring.



In the master bedroom the painted wooden antique bed was decorated with a large linen canopy hung from the ceiling with ribbons.

Spacious Apartment in Linnaeus

Good morning dear readers. How was your weekend? Mine was splendid, thank you. Let's have a look at another spacious apartment from real estate site Alvehm. Located in the middle of Linnaeus it preserves period features such as stucco, oak parquet flooring in the bedroom and living room, and high ceilings. Like it?
